Dragons Lair. This fantastically animated arcade game was certainly a challenge. Fun to watch. Tough to play. Totally 80s. Posted by YouTube user Jamesnov1970. COPYRIGHT Starcom, 1983.

The game was epic and so innovative! I dropped a ton of quarters into this machine, do you remember Time Traveler, the giant holographic arcade machine with the same mechanics as Dragons Lair? You were a goofy cowboy that had to navigate through different time era’s and it was based on your timing, the directions, and button combinations you pressed. Both were groundbreaking, both were money suckers! Love this stuff and I really miss the arcade as it was in the 80’s.
I’m not familiar with Time Traveler but you’ve peaked my interest. I’ll have to check it out. Do you remember Space Ace? I really miss arcades too. hanging in an arcade in the 80s was the equivalent of social networking today. Dragons Lair always fascinated me. I was terrible at the game but the animation always lured me in for another try.
Was this a cartoon? Or a video game? Or a cartoon ad for a video game? It looks fantastic, whatever it is.
Also, @ Cowboyography, I think I remember the game you’re talking about. I was just telling somebody about it yesterday and I don’t think he believed me. It was called Time Traveler?
It’s an arcade by SEGA that works on LaserDisc 😉 video:
Laser Disc was a mind-blower in 1983. This game was way ahead of it’s time.
Indeed. I recently found a few Laser Discs And last week a Laser Disc player on a flea market for really cheap. I was amazed at the quality, wasn’t expecting that so yet another thing to collect for, I love watching movies on it 😀
It’s a video game that was way ahead if it’s time. Kind of like an interactive cartoon. Former Disney animator Don Blyth did all of the animation for the game. Still awesome to this day.
As a little girl, I used to walk to the arcade with my older brother and watch him play this game and Space Ace for HOURS. I was fascinated. And these were the days when you had to put your freaking quarters where your mouth was – no extra lives crap. Proud to say that my brother beat this and Space Ace and I got to watch. SO MUCH FUN. I now have it, Dragons Lair II, and Space Ace on a Wii disc. I don’t play it much (I suck) but it has a feature that will just play the entire game for you as a complete cartoon. Very cool. I liked Kimberly much better than that vapid Daphne in Dragon’s Lair, though. Not too hard to see what old Dirk the Daring was looking for in her. 😀
Don Bluth was very, very awesome.
So many great arcade memories. Thanks for sharing yours. I was also more of a Dragons Lair spectator. Kids that were a few years old would dominate that game. My local arcade, The Circus, had two screens mounted above the game so everyone could watch. Fantastic times.
Thank you, Pieterjanvl! I wasn’t even sure if I really remembered it … or if I had dreamed that game. Good to know it was real, lol.
